The Bioceramic Revolution in Endodontics: Science, Evidence and Clinical Applications
Bioceramic materials have transformed contemporary endodontics, expanding clinical possibilities in root canal sealing and vital pulp therapy. This session shall explore the science behind these materials, their physicochemical and biological properties, and their clinical applications, with particular emphasis on bioceramic root canal sealers and pulp capping materials. Drawing on current scientific literature and self-performed experimental investigations, the session will critically examine the evidence supporting their performance, discuss their advantages and highlight their relevance to evidence-based endodontic practice. Clinical cases with follow-up records will further illustrate their wide variety of application, clinical usage tips, outcomes and relevance to everyday endodontic practice.
This session will provide a comprehensive exploration of contemporary bioceramic materials, beginning with their composition, setting characteristics, physicochemical properties and biological mechanisms. Particular emphasis will be placed on two important areas of clinical application: bioceramic root canal sealers used in endodontic obturation and bioceramic materials employed in vital pulp therapy.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:
- Understand the composition, physicochemical properties and biological mechanisms of contemporary bioceramic materials.
- Master the clinical applications of bioceramic root canal sealers and pulp capping agents
- Critically evaluate and compare the laboratory and clinical evidence relating to the performance and biological behaviour of bioceramics.
- Interpret clinical cases and follow-up outcomes to understand the practical application and clinical performance of bioceramic materials.
- Apply scientific evidence to clinical decision-making, including material selection, indications and limitations.
