Join Dr. Björn Ludwig and Join Prof. Ravindra Nanda to explore the integration of direct-to-print Shape Memory Aligners (SMA). Discover the ups and downs of their clinical journey and learn how SMA's unique biomechanics and simplified in-house workflow offer highly predictable, precise, and comfortable orthodontic treatments.
Direct printing has the potential to fundamentally change how aligners are designed, manufactured and clinically applied. By eliminating thermoforming, the digital design can be transferred directly into the final appliance while allowing new possibilities in material behaviour, geometry, force delivery and shape-memory activation.
This lecture will provide a clinically focused overview of direct-printed aligners, with particular emphasis on Graphy shape-memory materials and their practical application. We will discuss the complete digital workflow, material characteristics, treatment planning, staging, attachment design, clinical handling and the use of thermal activation. Selected clinical cases will illustrate current indications, biomechanical opportunities and potential advantages, but also the limitations, mistakes and learning curve associated with this evolving technology.
The aim is to move beyond the excitement surrounding a new manufacturing method and critically explore where direct-printed aligners can already offer genuine clinical value, where further evidence is still required and how clinicians can integrate the technology responsibly into everyday orthodontic practice.
Recent studies have shown a low efficacy of various tooth movement with thermoplastic aligners. The problem is primarily due to low elasticity of plastics. A recent invention of a resin has allowed shape memory (SMAs) characteristics with aligners just like memory arch wires. No attachments are needed as force is delivered by sequentially changing the shape of the teeth needing movement. These aligners can also be made in house direct printing or by laboratories. This presentation will discuss evidence- based studies on shape memory material, biomechanics and easy 3D process in making them. Treatment of few malocclusions will be presented using SMAs.
