He is Vice Dean at the Department of Odontology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Professor Ekstrand has made major contributions to caries research and teaching and has an International reputation for research excellence.Professor Ekstrand has been teaching as Associate Professor at the Department of Cariology & Endodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, School of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark since 1986. He has taught postgraduate education to dentists and dental hygienists since 1987, this corresponds to more than 150 courses.
Professor Ekstrand has attended and spoken at many international meetings all over the world including Brazil, Germany, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK and US.
In collaboration with staff at Nexö Public Dental Service, Denmark, he established an education centre in the Nexö-method.
As a member of ORCA, Professor Ekstrand has participated in 3 ORCA summer schools which took place in Poland, Hungary and Brazil. He is also a member of the International Caries Detection and Assessment system core group, (ICDAS-core group) which was formed in 2002. Together with other members he has been involved in directing 1-3 day training courses in ICDAS in the following countries; Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Holland, Kuwait and Malaysia.
