Beyond Periodontal Medicine. How will new insights change the future role of dental profession?
There has been an explosion in research into possible associations between periodontitis and various systemic diseases and conditions. For the practicing Dental Professional, making rational decisions for patient management can be very difficult with so much information in the literature.
In November 2012, a workshop was jointly held by the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology. Four working groups reviewed the evidence for associations between Periodontitis and Diabetes, Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes and Systemic diseases. The output of these working groups was a summary of the evidence to date, along with recommendations for the Dental Professional, Medical Professional and Patient.
Representatives from each of the four working groups will contribute to a panel discussion moderated by Drs Robert Genco and Mariano Sanz, Co-Chairs of the November Workshop. The findings of each working group will be presented and the practical recommendations for Health Care professionals discussed.
Participants will learn:
- The current state of the evidence for links between Periodontitis and Diabetes, Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes and Systemic diseases
- How this evidence should guide patient management
- The areas where the evidence is not clear and opportunities for future research
