A Dry Mouth Without A Face? Xerostomia Affects All Age Groups!
Medication and Disease-Induced Xerostomia Affects All Age Groups!
Well over 500 prescription and non-prescription medications are thought to have xerostomic side effects. These effects are compounded when these medications are used concurrently. In addition, many systemic diseases may contribute to both the development of xerostomia and the exacerbation of its complications. Once again, these effects are compounded when these diseases occur concurrently. Since concurrent medications and disease states are typically associated with medically complex patients, many may therefore assume that xerostomia is a condition which is of concern to only select age groups. However, as clinicians, we must be vigilant and always aware that, unfortunately, this condition may afflict members of any generation…the many faces of xerostomia.
This program will provide participants with an overview of xerostomia, medications and systemic diseases implicated in its management and used in its treatment and the impact of both the disease and its treatment on dental therapy. Special emphasis will be given to patient management strategies and techniques essential for successful treatment planning.
Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Describe xerostomia and explain its various etiologies.
- Identify the prescription and non-prescription medications that have xerostomic side effects.
- Identify the systemic diseases which may contribute to the development of xerostomia.
- Describe the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management of xerostomia.
