Of the U.S. licensing jurisdictions that have currently implemented CE requirements for licensure renewal of dentists and allied staff, most accept the credits offered by ADA CERP. However, each licensing jurisdiction may have additional criteria that must be met. Various types of CE are recognized and accredited.

Self-study or self-instructional indicates that the dentist reviews the material on their own time, not in a live lecture or classroom setting. A post-test taken online is required after a self-study course is taken. This may take the form of a webcast (a recorded and archived webinar only) or text study.

There are two types of webinars: live and recorded. As mentioned, webinars that are recorded for dentists to review at anytime are "SELF STUDY". 

On the other hand, webinars, which are broadcasted live via the internet, are not considered self-study, because they are interactive. Participants have the opportunity to communicate with the speaker via real-time chat, etc. Such live and interactive webinars are considered "LIVE CE" and are regarded the same as any off-line, on-site lecture or hands-on workshop.

VERIFY YOUR STATE'S REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSURE

Remember to verify the specific state dental boards' requirements for re-licensure in the state where you are licensed. Many states have restrictions on the number of CE credits that can be earned through self-instructional online courses.
