Tongue cleaning as an integrated feature within individual oral health coaching (IMC)
The webinar will point out the meaning of professional tongue cleaning within individual oral health coaching (IMC) in dental hygiene and prevention management on the background of oral and systemic health association.
Traditional dental hygiene concepts focus on biofilm removal on tooth surfaces in order to reduce one of the the causes of inflammatory periodontal diseases and caries. The webinar will concentrate on the importance of professional tongue cleaning within oral health coaching (IMC) in dental hygiene and prevention management on the background of oral and systemic health association. In this context, halitosis as a wide spread phenomenon with severe implications with regard to socio-cultural and personal aspects for the patients suffering from this pathological clinical finding [Slot et al. 2015] should be treated professionally. Even though epidemiological studies are rare in this field and cannot be compared due to different methodologies, halitosis prevalence may amount to 25% [Miyazaki et al. 1995, Söder et al. 2000, Liu et al. 2006]. Quirynen et al. (2009) could demonstrate halitosis cause to be located within the mouth in 75.9% on the basis of 2000 patients enrolled in the study. Bacterial metabolic products play the major role in generating bad breath. In 57.3% tongue coating was found to be the intraoral reason [Quirynen et al. 2009]. Thus providing a professional tool for effective tongue cleaning is desirable to be used in professional tongue coating removal supported by an antibacterial tongue cleaning gel in order to provide sustainable malodour removal.
The webinar will demonstrate construction properties of a new on the dental market suction attachment (TS-1). This sole on the market professional suction attachment allows on the one hand to rub in the antibacterial gel into the rough tongue surface and on the other hand to effectively remove the tongue coating in an agreeable manor for the patient. Thus, the suction attachment combines three functions: first one side provides a suitable surface for gel dispension, second a multi lamellar tongue scraper for disrupting the bacterial tongue coating and third to hygienically and comfortably suck away the gel-tongue coating mixture from the patient#s tongue. A video will demonstrate the clinical application and its effectiveness. Concluding decisive facts will be summarized and important take home messages will be transported.
