How to screen patients at risk of peri-implantitis
The reason why we place implants is to replace missing teeth! But we have to remember that most of the patients have lost their teeth because they didn't take good care of them!
Many of them have only brushed dentures for many years. In 2017, we now have access to many studies, who demonstrate clearly that almost half of the implant patients show serious signs of inflammation around the implants known as peri-implant mucositis. When we start seeing bone loss around implants, it is peri-implantitis. It's crucial to educate your patients about of the importance of oral hygiene at the beginning of the implant treatment to have a long-term success. Treatment of peri- implantitis is difficult and expensive, with compromised prognosis. Teamwork is mandatory. So, yes, we can get good results!
