Really great course and I appreciate the application of Dr. van As' own clinical experience, but how do I know if MY practice is ready for laser dentistry? I do not want to overwhelm my team, but I feel like we could really benefit from this technology. If anyone can offer their experience in integrating a laser into your practice, I would be very thankful.

Ursula.....please email me directly at glennvanas@mac.com and I will offer you some advice personally on this. I need to know more about YOUR practice to offer any advice.

There are 4 different wavelengths in dentistry. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Each is really best suited for a certain type of practice.

Email me and I will help you determine if a laser will help YOUR practice and if so which one.

Hello Glenn!

I am here in Moscow and a number of practitioners who have watched this webinar here in Russia had some questions. We have translated them and promised to forward them to you...

1)How deep can the diode laser penetrate?

2) What type of glaucoma can be removed by diode lasers?

3)Can we remove the glaucoma on the skin, or just on the gingiva?

4) In which clinical cases would you use anesthesis, when working with the laser?

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!

Hi there Julia...thanks for the questions.

1. The diode laser can penetrate 2-6mm into the tissue depending on the energy used.

Journal of Laser and Health Academy
Vol. 2007; No. 4; www.laserandhealth.com

2. I am not sure what glaucoma of the skin. In English Glaucoma is a disease of the eyes and not possible for a dentist to treat. Lasers are used in the treatment of Glaucoma but I do not think it is a diode laser that is used.

3. Glaucoma of the skin again is not something I am aware of. The term is not translatable into English.

4. Anything below 1 w can be used without anesthetic. Typically cases I can do without anesthetic include

a. Minor revisions of tissue ( gingivectomy)
b. Oral lesions ( aphthous ulcers, hpv lesions, denture sore spots).
c. uncovering of some tissue to expose canines and also gingival hyperplasia
d. Crown troughing.
e. minor venous lakes.
f. Some minor frenectomies.

The use of strong topicals is recommended (EMLA, Tricaine blue, Cetycaine).

It takes patience and longer time to treat these areas and you need good magnification.

I hope that helps you alot.

Thanks for watching

Glenn
